Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) like other chloroacetic acids has a number of practical applications in the field of podiatry and dermatology.

Applied as a topical medication for chemoablation of plantar calluses and verrucae plantaris (plantar warts), trichloroacetic acid can also be used as an acidic solution for softening thickened toe nails and in the treatment of onychocryptosis or ingrown toenail.

Description

Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) 25g – a strong keratolytic agent with sharp, pungent odour, used as an acidic topical medicine by podiatrists and dermatologists for decades. Used in the treatment of ingrowing toenail (onychocryptosis) as a topical solution (80% TCA) in partial nail avulsion and selective chemical cauterization of the matrix – using 80% TCA for selective matricectomy (in the ingrown toenail) is deemed an effective, quick and easy method. Applications include: Applied as a topical medication in chemoablation of plantar calluses and verrucae plantaris (plantar warts), calluses, corns and psoriatic plaques. Alternatively, as a foot soak for softening thickened toenails before trimming, helping prevent splintering which may cause infection. A well-known caustic agent and analog of acetic acid, trichloroacetic acid is also extensively used in dermatology, typically as the active ingredient in many popular chemical peels, helping loosen and exfoliate the top layer of the skin over the course of several days, revealing a smoother, new layer of skin underneath. An effective non-invasive skin treatment for lessening the appearance of skin discolorations, scarring, lines and wrinkles, trichloroacetic acid is also used to successfully treat condyloma acuminata (genital and anal warts).

Compound

Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) – an organochlorine compound derived from an acetic acid – an acetic acid where all three methyl hydrogens have been substituted by chlorine. Trichloroacetic acid – a carboxylic acid and hazardous alkylating agent – a colourless or white crystalline solid related to monochloroacetic acid (chloroacetic acid) and dichloroacetic acid compounds, also known as trichloroethanoic acid. Molecular formula: C2HCl3O2 (CAS# 76-03-9 / 163.38 g·mol−1 g) Melting point: 57°C to 58°C Boiling point: 196°C to 197°C

Precautions

For professional use only – chemical corrosive to tissues and metals. Intended for use on the skin only – avoid applying on open wounds, sunburned or wind-burned, irritated or chapped skin. Important treatment considerations for those with severe allergies and history of severe reactions (anaphylaxis). Avoid excessive / over-application as may cause redness, discomfort, skin sensitivity, severe irritation and burning. Avoid contact with skin, mouth, nose, eyes and clothing and if in the event of contact, cautiously rinse with water for several minutes and seek immediate medical assistance. Trichloroacetic acid can irritate the nose, throat and lungs causing coughing and / or shortness of breath. Higher exposures can cause pulmonary edema (fluid build-up in the lung), severe respiratory difficulties and may affect normal liver function. Wear appropriate protective clothing including gloves, coat and / or apron or coverall, safety / chemical goggles. Wash thoroughly immediately after exposure to trichloroacetic acid.
